Grief for Beginners

By Zachary Huffman

Grief.

Quite different.

Yes, not the same.

Depression is constant for some.

Always there.

Grief, grief feels like an icy ocean wave catching you off guard.

Suddenly the cold shocks your system.

The salt stings your eyes.

Your cuts are exposed.

Yet, there is a part of you that blooms.

Like a flower that forgot there was light.

As much as we would kike to keep ahold of that blooming flowing, it dies.

As the wave recedes, the salt that stings subsides.

The sun in the sky warms your skin.

You are not the same as just moments ago.

Somehow, you have grown.

And you convince yourself the water will not catch you off guard again.

But you said that last time.

And you still don’t want to get out of the water.

Because once you get out, there will never be another chance for a wave to catch you off guard.
